A “Bah! Humbug!” Kind of Christmas

A little tree and nativity scene on the dresser.

Ok, so maybe it’s not all that bad.  In fact, it could be a lot worse.  The fact remains, however, that I spent this Christmas apart from my wife, and that seriously put a dent in my holiday spirit.  This year just feels different.  The ‘spirit’ of the holiday seems to have gone around me without touching me.  The lights are up.  The tree is there.  The gifts are under it.  The food was good.  I had family around me.  And yet, without my wife it seems pale.  All I can do is look forward to next year, when we can do things right.  Next Christmas will be extra special.

Some of my photos came out fairly decent, so I thought I’d share a few.

Roast pork, black beans with rice and yuca.

Traditionally, my mom’s side of the family does Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve, so last night we had a simple meal of roast pork, black beans with rice and yuca.  It looks simple, but trust me, it tasted great!  We also had cake and homemade oatmeal cookies.

Bacon, frying on a griddle.

Potatoes frying.

Fresh biscuits.

This morning we followed up the dinner with a really good, traditional breakfast of bacon, biscuits and gravy, fried potatoes and eggs.

Christmas isn’t completely without joy this year, but like I said, it’s just not the same.  My wife and I spent every day together for almost 2 and a half years until we had to temporarily part ways.  It really puts a damper on my holiday spirit, and instead of really enjoying this Christmas, it feels more like another step on a path to something more fulfilling, when my wife and I will be together again.  I’m looking forward to it.

My mom makes great biscuits and gravy! My grandmothers are even better. =)

Ya. Next year will definitely be a lot more special. I hope to spend Christmas Eve strolling through Central Park with my wife! I agree with you about the food. Some of the best meals I've had are simple ones. It's great to try new and exotic things, but nothing is as a pleasant as something like biscuits and gravy, probably because of the memories it evokes. I'll definitely be spending New Year's Eve at home. Times Square is madness on NYE here. Better to be at home, comfortable and warm and just watch it on TV. I hope you… Read more »

The way we do it though, is we use the grease left from the bacon to make a thick brown gravy.…..oh my god I just ate lunch but reading this makes me hungry all over again.

It really is too bad that you couldn't enjoy xmas with your wife, so I hope it'll all come together for you both for next year's celebration. That said, I love all of your food pics! Simply prepared meals are, in my opinion, the best. They don't take a whole lot of slaving over in the kitchen and more often than not they're also comfort foods which makes eating them even more special. I'm looking forward to your new year's eve meal….we'll be ringing in the new year at home this year.

SWEET! Also you have a kindle right? how is it I wanna get one but I think the screen might be too small for reading manga on? how do you find it? SWEET!

The Kindle is absolutely amazing for reading books on. I think the screen would be too small for manga, though, unless you got the 9.7″ DX version, but the price tag on that is quite a bit higher as well. Again, for books, it's perfect.

In the US we call them biscuits. I think in the UK that's what you call cookies. I'm pretty sure they're made from flour. It's like bread, but heavier in consistency. Some people butter them. Some people crack them open and put their bacon in the middle. The way we do it though, is we use the grease left from the bacon to make a thick brown gravy. From what I know it's done by adding flour and water to the grease. Then we break the biscuits apart into bits and pour the gravy over them. I could eat just… Read more »
